Overview
AVAVAV was established in 2021 in Stockholm, Sweden by Beate Skonare Karlsson. AVAVAV is an independent fashion house situated at the intersection of luxury streetwear and performance art. Despite its emphasis on provocation and theatrics, the label remains anchored in a rigorous, producing limited-edition runs from deadstock textiles in collaboration with local Italian artisans. Its growing global presence includes collaborations with major athletic brands, further establishing its role as a provocative force that entertains while questioning the status quo.
Led by creative director Beate Karlsson, the brand has gained international recognition for its disruptive and satirical approach to fashion norms, often using runway presentations as a medium for social commentary. The brand’s trajectory reflects a careful balance between Swedish pragmatism and Italian craftsmanship, positioning itself as a critical voice within the contemporary industry. The brand has remained visible within the fashion calendar and related retail networks. That structure has helped preserve an authorial identity as the label has developed.
Philosophy
The use of premium deadstock fabrics dictates the creative process, where the availability of material functions as a catalyst for small-batch experimentation. Design signals often involve the distortion of familiar silhouettes and the introduction of uncanny, sculptural elements that challenge traditional beauty ideals. This circular approach not only honours materials destined for landfill but also highlights the intrinsic value of the artisanal skill required to transform discarded resources into high-fashion objects.
Satire and performance are treated as legitimate design tools, used to expose and critique the pretensions of the luxury market. Collections are conceived as narrative pieces where imperfections are known and the boundaries between the garment and the body are frequently tested. By maintaining a female-owned, independent space for play and experimentation, the house promotes a philosophy where style is a vehicle for cultural discourse. Narrative and cultural reference operate here as structuring devices rather than decorative afterthoughts. Material choice and construction are treated as part of the argument, not as secondary finishing touches.
