About theFashionDB

what we do

TheFashionDB is an independent fashion research platform built to make fashion’s institutional memory public, legible and connected. It brings knowledge dispersed across books, catalogues, archives, interviews, show records and trade reporting into a structured, searchable and readable resource, without sanding its complexity down into trivia.
Linking designers, brands, collections, appointments and events through chronology, TheFashionDB reveals the wider machinery of authorship, commerce and spectacle. Much of it is technically visible yet difficult to locate, connect or understand without considerable prior knowledge.
The aim is a navigable history: one that lets readers follow the traces, relationships and invisible aftershocks that move through fashion over time.

FASHION IN TIME

Research across the database's 1460 timeline entries for brands, people, collections and events powers a growing set of selective editorial chronologies.
These pages follow the appointments, departures, debuts, closures, relaunches and cultural events through which fashion changes shape across years, houses and cities. Together, they show fashion in motion: creative, institutional, commercial and global.

Year in Fashion

Year in Fashion gathers the collections, appointments, brand shifts and cultural aftershocks that gave each year its particular shape. It shows what changed, what endured and where later shifts first became visible.

Appointments tracker

The Appointments Tracker follows creative director arrivals, exits and succession moves across fashion houses. A clear view of the industry’s revolving door, with the confetti removed.

HOW THE RECORD IS BUILT

TheFashionDB is built through source-led research, editorial review and structured data modelling. Primary material and reputable secondary sources are compared across dates, roles, collections and institutional changes before each finding is connected to the wider record.
Uncertainty stays visible when the evidence is incomplete or contradictory. TheFashionDB does not warehouse every rumour, runway look or press release, it identifies the facts and relationships that make a designer, brand, collection or year intelligible.

Founder and Editor

TheFashionDB was founded and is edited by Ilya Muravyëv, a digital designer and creative director with 25 years of experience in digital products, editorial systems and visual communication, and an education in fashion history and theory.
