Overview
Dirk Van Saene is the independent fashion practice established in Antwerp by the Belgian designer and artist after his graduation from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1981. He first sold self-produced clothing through Beauties & Heroes, the boutique he opened around 1982, and won the Golden Spindle in 1983. His participation in the 1986 British Designer Show placed the label within the international emergence of the Antwerp Six, but its subsequent development remained deliberately small.
Van Saene presented his first Paris collection in 1990 after designing rainwear for Bartsons. Collections appeared intermittently rather than through an uninterrupted calendar, with production entrusted to small Belgian and Italian studios. Everyday materials, painted surfaces and trompe-l’oeil tailoring became recurring methods, most clearly in Spring/Summer 1991 and the Autumn/Winter 1998–99 collection known as Black Sissi and Fake Tailoring.
The practice also encompasses painting, ceramics, teaching and retail. Van Saene has taught master’s students at the Antwerp Academy since 2008–09, opened the DVS multi-brand boutique in 2013 and has exhibited sculpture and ceramics through Song Vienna and Gallery Sofie Van de Velde. Fashion remains active within this wider studio structure, without being presented as a continuously scaled house.
Philosophy
Van Saene treats dressmaking as a site for wit, illusion and direct handling. Tailored collars, lapels and bodies may be flattened into print or appliqué, while kitchen gloves, bandages, plastic tablecloths and checked cotton can be worked through techniques associated with French couture. The result tests how little material is needed for a garment to retain the signs of status and construction.
Painting enters the clothes as both image and process. Hand-painted fabrics, portraits and floral works are transferred to silk or positioned against deliberately awkward proportions; ceramics and sculptural figures extend the same interest in character, surface and imperfect bodies. Domestic objects, garden plants and animals recur without being separated into a decorative lifestyle programme.
Small scale is structural to the work. Collections are made when the studio has a reason to make them, sold selectively and allowed to differ from one another rather than maintaining a uniform brand code. Teaching, boutique curation and gallery work therefore sit alongside clothing as equal parts of an independent authorship practice.

For MoMu’s fortieth-anniversary Antwerp Six exhibition, Van Saene reconstructed the Autumn/Winter 1998–99 presentation with rotating mannequins and archival looks. The room preserved his distinct humour and critique of the idealised fashion body within a museum account of six separate careers.
All Good Here brought Van Saene’s Paris Internationale presentation to Gallery Sofie Van de Velde’s South space in late 2024. The exhibition extended his current gallery chronology with a supported date and title absent from the supplied dossier.
An Angel, Kissing Spring opened at Gallery Sofie Van de Velde in May 2023. The solo exhibition continued Van Saene’s work in painting and sculpture alongside his teaching and intermittent clothing practice.
Gallery Sofie Van de Velde presented Stories of Hope and Despair in Antwerp in 2021, bringing together new paintings and ceramic sculptures. The exhibition reinforced Van Saene’s current public identity as both fashion designer and represented artist.
The Belgian Fashion Awards jury prize recognised Van Saene’s personal way of working within a rapidly changing sector. The award treated independence, irregular output and resistance to scale as the achievement rather than as gaps in a conventional brand trajectory.
A second Ceramics exhibition at Song Vienna in 2017 continued Van Saene’s gallery work after the MoMu project. The repeated venue confirms sculpture as an ongoing part of his practice rather than a single fashion-adjacent project.
MoMu’s Rik Wouters & The Private Utopia included fifteen Van Saene fashion silhouettes, ceramics and a large domestic rug hand-tufted by Limited Edition. The installation presented painting, clothing, craft and everyday life as one practice.
Van Saene opened DVS above Coccodrillo in central Antwerp in 2013. The shop combined his clothes and ceramics with independent Belgian labels, including Walter Van Beirendonck, in an interior furnished by Maarten Baas.
Song Vienna presented a solo exhibition of Van Saene’s ceramics in 2009. The show made his sculptural practice public within the same period that teaching became a regular part of his career.
A few months after the Bartsons project, Van Saene presented his first collection in Paris. The event did not lead him to adopt a fixed international calendar; production remained small and collections continued according to his own rhythm.
Van Saene presented his own collection at the 1986 British Designer Show alongside Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs and Marina Yee. The resulting Antwerp Six label described their shared reception, not a joint design practice.
Van Saene won the Golden Spindle in 1983, becoming the competition’s first winner. The Belgian Textile Plan prize gave his small retail practice national visibility and linked it to the industrial programme that preceded the Antwerp designers’ international recognition.
