Overview
Masha Popova is a London-based womenswear label founded by Ukrainian-born designer Masha Popova, who studied at Central Saint Martins. The brand emerged in 2020–2021 with a focus on denim and body-aware separates that channel late-1990s and early-2000s references through precise cut and surface treatment. Early visibility came through fashion press and celebrity wear, helping position the label within the newer London schedule.
Collections centre on distressed jeans, corset-like tops, micro-skirts and jackets, alongside printed jerseys and knitwear that extend the same vocabulary. Popova’s work is often described as balancing glamour with grit: garments look worn-in, yet are built with careful patterning and engineered fit. The designer has linked the project to Ukrainian roots and childhood memory, using nostalgia as a material for silhouette and attitude rather than costume.
Distributed through a mix of wholesale and direct channels, the label sits within contemporary street-to-runway fashion, where subcultural signals are refined into repeatable wardrobe pieces.
Philosophy
Popova positions fashion as personal narrative, using denim as a carrier of memory, identity and everyday toughness. The brand’s emphasis on worn surfaces and close fit treats “lived experience” as an aesthetic: clothes are intended to feel already inhabited, without losing control of line or proportion.
This philosophy also values contradiction. A single look may combine sweetness with abrasion, or restraint with exposure, reflecting the mixed emotional charge of youth culture references. Rather than chasing novelty for its own sake, the studio returns to a tight set of codes—jeans, corsetry, second-skin tops—and keeps recalibrating them through fabrication, print and fit. In that sense, the work frames confidence as something constructed: garments that offer armour through cut while leaving room for vulnerability, humour and self-invention.
The aim is expressive dressing that remains wearable, where attitude is carried by detail and finish rather than by excessive styling.
