Overview
Off‑White was founded in 2013 by Virgil Abloh, an American architect and DJ who previously worked as Kanye West’s creative director. The brand emerged from Abloh’s earlier project, Pyrex Vision, and quickly became a dominant force in the intersection of streetwear and luxury. Off‑White’s early collections repurposed familiar motifs such as diagonal stripes, quotation marks and industrial tape, turning them into instantly recognisable signatures.
Collaborations with Nike, Ikea and artists like Jenny Holzer amplified its visibility. In 2018 LVMH took a minority stake in Off‑White’s parent company, signalling mainstream acceptance. After Abloh’s death in 2021, the brand has continued under a studio collective, maintaining his vision.
Off‑White offers menswear, womenswear, accessories and home goods and has flagship stores from Paris to Tokyo. The brand is known for limited‑edition drops and marketing that blurs the line between product and art installation. Its items often command high resale values and have become staples within street style and celebrity wardrobes. Off‑White remains a cultural reference point for the convergence of fashion, art and music.
Philosophy
Off‑White’s philosophy lies in exploring the grey area between streetwear and high fashion. Virgil Abloh viewed his brand as a laboratory for ideas, intentionally leaving quotation marks around words to question authenticity and meaning. He championed the democratic notion that luxury could originate from everyday context and be accessible to younger consumers. The brand constantly recontextualises industrial objects—carabiner clips, safety belts—and prints them on expensive fabrics, challenging perceptions of value.
Abloh was also committed to diversity and inclusivity. Off‑White’s runways cast models of all backgrounds, and the brand collaborated with emerging artists and institutions to support new voices. Its name itself references the area between black and white, a metaphor for embracing nuance.
Following Abloh’s passing, the company continues to uphold his ethos by fostering creativity, collaboration and social consciousness within a luxury framework.
