Overview
SHARE SPIRIT is a Tokyo label founded by Hikaru Katano in 2000 after a long prehistory of travel, collecting and independent design under his earlier label Grace. Katano had left Japan for England at nineteen and developed a working method around worn clothing, repair and direct contact with material cultures encountered during travel. His partnership with master patternmaker Shoko Katano predates SHARE SPIRIT and became central to its early construction: Hikaru gathered objects, textiles and garment ideas, while Shoko translated irregular materials and asymmetric concepts into repeatable patterns. The 2000 launch joined a new fashion label to an unusually immersive Daikanyama boutique-museum, filled with Katano’s collected objects, and to an early Paris retail and wholesale presence.
During the 2000s and 2010s the label matured through a quiet international trade system outside the conventional runway circuit. SHARE SPIRIT appeared at Tranoï and later through Showroom Romeo during Paris fashion-market weeks, presenting sample sets to buyers while keeping its creative and retail base in Tokyo. A historical SHARE SPIRIT HOMME division handled structured menswear, although the clothes themselves frequently crossed gendered buying categories. Royal Flash became a long-running Japanese stockist and special-order partner, while S.O.S fp carried Katano’s silver, brass and enamel jewellery. HYDE’s repeated use of the label gave particular jackets, tanks, tailoring and sukajan forms a strong afterlife in Japanese rock culture; his role was patronage and styling, not design authorship.
The public archive becomes more legible again through Japanese order exhibitions and direct retail. BORDEAUX preserved named seasonal presentations including Spring/Summer 2019 GYPSY AND ROCK and Spring/Summer 2020 STREET ART; in 2022 SHARE SPIRIT released a formal collaboration with ADDICT OF THE TRIP MINDS and opened its first directly operated online store as part of a combined offline-and-online strategy. Official buyer exhibitions, Royal Flash seasonal features and BORDEAUX order events continue through 2026, with recent garments carrying new season codes and selected pieces explicitly made in Japan. The label therefore remains an active founder-designed practice, operating through direct commerce, specialist stockists and appointment-led seasonal presentations.
Philosophy
Katano’s work begins with time as a material. A pair of leather trousers bought in London in the mid-1980s, worn for years and repeatedly repaired with rough jute thread, became an early statement of the value he places on patina, damage and accumulated use. SHARE SPIRIT carries that logic into new clothes through distressed leather, faded cotton, raw edges, waxed and washed surfaces, reused military details and garments designed to become more personal through wear. Age is not applied as a decorative filter alone; it is treated as evidence of touch, repair and previous life.
Travel feeds the label through specific objects and working relationships. Katano has described studying vicuña and historic textiles in Peru, collecting antique military buttons, Afghan embroidery and Indonesian scarf fragments, and commissioning fine braided leather lacings from artisans in Mexico after years of repeated visits. These materials are reorganised through a Japanese atelier logic in which Shoko Katano’s patternmaking was historically crucial. Bamboo-silk tailoring, silk velvet and satin sukajan, discharge-printed jersey, paraffin-finished leather, dense embroidery and shippo-yaki enamel jewellery all turn found or historically inflected material into controlled garment and object construction.
The resulting silhouette combines military structure with romantic looseness. Narrow tailoring, long tuxedo shirts, officer and rider jackets, corset-like lacing and hardware sit alongside fluid drape, sheer layers, oversized jersey and adjustable shapes that can move across conventional menswear and womenswear sizing. Recurrent skulls, religious photographs, hands, eyes and collage graphics give the surface language a memento-mori charge, but the strongest continuity lies underneath them: a garment system built to accommodate irregular materials, layering, ageing and bodily variation. Current collections preserve that vocabulary while introducing fresh prints, Indian cotton, bamboo blends, travel vests, jewellery and special-order pieces through the same small-scale seasonal rhythm.

Button TextKatano announced a new operating phase in 2022 built around stronger digital communication, a rebuilt official site and SHARE SPIRIT’s first directly operated online store. Online stock was linked to the Daikanyama shop, adding direct e-commerce to the label’s established physical retail, stockist and order-event channels.
During the 2010s SHARE SPIRIT presented seasonal samples at Showroom Romeo, 18 rue Ferdinand Duval, during the Paris women’s ready-to-wear sales windows. The last firmly established campaign in this sequence ran through 11 March 2017, closing the brand’s best-documented period of continuous Paris showroom representation.
SHARE SPIRIT appeared at Tranoï in Paris from the Spring/Summer 2006 trade cycle, with later verified campaigns at the Carrousel du Louvre and a Parc Royal showroom. The format was commercial and appointment-led, placing Katano’s collections in the international buying circuit without a catwalk show.
By the mature 2006–15 period, SHARE SPIRIT HOMME was used for structured menswear, including tailoring, shirting, distressed denim and military-derived outerwear. Buyers often crossed the line boundary, and current direct commerce presents men’s and women’s product under the parent SHARE SPIRIT name.
Katano has remained the principal designer of SHARE SPIRIT since its establishment, directing clothing, materials, graphics, jewellery and the wider image of the label. His current role is visible in the 2022 direct-store statement and in-person participation in 2025 and 2026 collection-order events.
SHARE SPIRIT divisions and related structures
SHARE SPIRIT has historically combined clothing with jewellery and objects. Its internal line structure has changed over time, and the current store presents men’s and women’s categories under the parent SHARE SPIRIT name.
Historical clothing lines
- SHARE SPIRIT HOMME
- Historical menswear division, documented in the mature 2000s–2010s period
- A dedicated menswear line centred on military tailoring, shirting, distressed denim, leather and engineered trousers. Its products often circulated alongside the main line, while a separately merchandised current HOMME line is not visible in the present direct-store structure.
Accessories and objects
- Jewellery and objects
- Long-running metalwork, accessories and found-object practice
- Silver, brass and enamel rings, antique-component jewellery, belts, brooches and small leather goods extend Katano’s material practice beyond clothing. Historical pieces included shippo-yaki skull rings, while current direct commerce continues to carry rings, necklaces, brooches, bags and leather accessories.
SHARE SPIRIT collaborations
Formal co-branded projects are relatively rare. The label’s more persistent outside relationships have been specialist retail orders and direct craft commissions, kept distinct from guest design or house authorship.
Formal collaboration
- ADDICT OF THE TRIP MINDS
- Co-branded stole, 2022
- A silk-and-modal stole released in black and white as ADDICT OF THE TRIP MINDS × SHARE SPIRIT, the clearest formally announced brand collaboration in the recent period.
Retail special orders
- ROYAL FLASH
- Long-running stockist and retailer-exclusive special-order relationship
- Royal Flash has carried SHARE SPIRIT for many years and repeatedly commissioned exclusive colourways, track jackets, graphic tops and seasonal variants. These releases form an important commercial strand of the label without constituting a separate design line.
