About this collection
A.F. Vandevorst’s first collection arrived in Paris for Autumn/Winter 1998–99 with the central contradictions of the house already intact. Delicate lingerie sat beneath heavy felt military clothing, leather and rivets introduced equestrian restraint, and the saddle corset turned riding equipment into a rigid brace around tailored clothing.
The presentation made psychology part of the silhouette. Models were given cassette tapes and lyrics and instructed to sing as they walked, while the concealed lingerie was intended to change their posture beneath the heavier outerwear. The collection established A.F. Vandevorst as a design partnership concerned with uniforms, vulnerability and performance from its first season.
