About this collection
Balenciaga’s first Paris collection opened the Avenue George V house in August 1937. The clothes translated Spanish Renaissance portraiture, ecclesiastical colour and regional dress into the Paris couture system through dark velvet, embroidery, lace and controlled ceremonial volume. The debut established immediate commercial credibility for a designer already successful in Spain and introduced the historical vocabulary that would remain visible throughout his career.
