About this collection

Presented after the death of Wladzio d’Attainville, Balenciaga’s closest partner and a founding figure in the Paris house, the Winter 1948 collection was dominated by black. The colour was not used as a neutral backdrop: velvet, satin and dense sculptural fabrics absorbed and reflected light differently, giving grief a formal architecture. The season deepened the monastic register that would remain central to the house’s image.
