About this collection
Autumn/Winter 1957 brought together the sack dress, baby-doll and cocoon forms in one of Balenciaga’s most consequential attacks on the fitted waist. Dresses fell from the shoulders without tracing the torso, while transparent outer layers and rounded coats made volume independent from anatomy. The season initially unsettled clients and press, but its waistless logic fed directly into the shift silhouettes of the 1960s.
