Josephus Thimister’s Balenciaga debut stripped away the revival’s brighter commercial tone in favour of black, white and severe architectural line. Gazar, long vertical shapes and controlled volume reconnected the ready-to-wear house with Cristóbal Balenciaga’s structural authority without attempting a literal couture reconstruction. The collection won strong support from Barneys New York and gave the house a sharper avant-garde position.
