About this collection

Given only months to replace Josephus Thimister, Nicolas Ghesquière presented his first Balenciaga collection at the Opéra Bastille in October 1997. Soft black jersey, sculpted leather and a restrained monastic palette linked 1990s minimalism to Cristóbal Balenciaga’s sack and puffball volumes. The show was modest in scale but decisive in effect, introducing the designer who would transform the house over the next fifteen years.
