Research travel in China and Japan was enlarged into giant sleeves, kimono- and robe-derived construction, lacquered colour and circus-scale performance. The deliberate compression of distinct Chinese and Japanese sources was central to both the visual impact and the later difficulty of Galliano’s cross-cultural collage.
