Monochrome serenity gave Autumn/Winter 2021 a quieter surface than Dissonance, but the calm remained unstable. Black and white became enough to organise the presentation: contrast, distance, silhouette and texture carried the work without the usual runway charge. The clothes suggested stillness while continuing to redraw the body’s expected proportions, creating a mood that was serene only from a distance. Kawakubo’s restraint felt pointed rather than passive, using reduced means to keep tension active beneath the surface. That quiet pressure gives the presentation its edge.
