Black Rose gave Autumn/Winter 2022 a compact image: floral, dark and resistant to easy romance. The rose became less a decorative motif than a contradiction held in form, balancing fragility with severity and bloom with shadow. Within the Tokyo-period presentations, the phrase gave the season a vivid emotional centre without requiring a literal narrative. Kawakubo’s flower is never simply pretty; here it feels guarded, mournful and sculptural, a symbol pressed into the darker language of the mainline. The image stays small, but its pressure is exact.
