About this collection

Halston III for J.C. Penney debuted at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on 8 June 1983 as the first completed fashion collection from Halston’s mass-market agreement with the retailer. The women’s assortment covered coats, suits, jackets, ponchos, knitwear, blouses, skirts, trousers, activewear, dresses, footwear, bags and accessories, organised for broad national retail distribution.

The launch reached more than 550 J.C. Penney stores, dedicated in-store Halston boutiques and the retailer’s catalogue, with parallel premieres staged across the United States. Prices of roughly ten to two hundred dollars brought Halston’s modular sportswear vocabulary to an audience far beyond the luxury salon and made the collection a major event in the history of designer participation in mass retail.
