Imane Ayissi

Mbek Idourrou explored presence through volume, combining references to the Senegalese grand boubou, Japanese kimono and wrapped dress from Central and West Africa. A fuchsia silk ensemble with a raffia-fringed cape entered the Victoria and Albert Museum collection. The garment’s rectangular cut, movement and sound made the collection a key institutional reference for Ayissi’s fusion of African textile knowledge and Paris couture finishing.
