About this collection

Spring/Summer 1996 pushed Prada’s challenge to conventional taste into its clearest 1990s form. Difficult colour, mixed pattern, deliberately uneasy proportion and prim silhouettes produced clothes whose awkwardness was controlled rather than accidental, making the collection a reference point in contemporary criticism about changing standards of beauty.

“Ugly chic” is retained as a later critical descriptor, not an official collection title. Miuccia Prada remained the institutional author, while David Sims photographed the campaign.
