About this collection
Hypnos Spring/Summer 1984 marked Vivienne Westwood’s independent authorship after the Westwood–McLaren partnership had broken down. The collection was shown in Tokyo at Hanae Mori’s Best of Five event and moved the designer into a new international setting during a transitional production period.
The work is important as an authorship boundary. Garments from the season can retain older McLaren/Westwood labelling, while the collection itself belongs to Westwood’s independent design practice and leads directly into the eponymous house formation of 1985–86.
