About this collection
Portrait Autumn/Winter 1990–91 was presented at 116 Pall Mall in London in March 1990. Westwood drew on eighteenth-century painting, decorative arts and corsetry, transferring imagery associated with François Boucher and Boulle ornament onto garments built around tightly controlled historical proportion.
The collection crystallised several mature Westwood codes at once, including corsetry as outerwear, museum-derived print, British tailoring and the transformation of historical dress into contemporary silhouette. These ideas continued to circulate through later collections and became central to the house’s international identity.
