Overview
6397 was founded in New York by Stella Ishii in 2013 as an in-house label connected to The NEWS, the independent showroom and wholesale business she established in 2000. Its name converts NEWS into the numbers on a telephone keypad, making the relationship structural as well as graphic. The label began from Ishii’s own working uniform and the wardrobes of women around the showroom rather than from a seasonal concept.
Denim forms the centre of 6397, supported by shirts, knitwear, tailoring, outerwear and graphic T-shirts designed to acquire character through repeated wear. Twisted seams, relaxed proportions, workwear references and deliberately imperfect fits distinguish the clothes from polished basics. Although presented principally as womenswear, the label’s cuts and showroom distribution have also encouraged unisex use without establishing a separate menswear line.
For much of its history, 6397 operated quietly through seasonal collections, direct retail and The NEWS network. A Noah capsule in 2017 linked the label’s graphic language to an ACLU fundraiser, while its continuing relationship with Creative Growth Art Center brought artist-altered garments, runway fundraising and later Japanese distribution. In September 2025, 6397 presented Spring 2026 on the official CFDA calendar, giving the long-running showroom label its first salon-style New York Fashion Week platform.
Philosophy
6397 treats clothing as a personal uniform whose value develops through use. Ishii’s approach to denim rejects perfect tailoring in favour of wrinkles, slouch, twisted seams and proportions that settle differently on each wearer. The wider wardrobe follows the same logic: straightforward garments are adjusted through fabric, scale and construction rather than through conspicuous seasonal themes.
The label also reflects Ishii’s work in designer representation. Years spent helping independent brands enter the American market produced an emphasis on judgement, longevity and the relationship between product and community. Political and artistic collaborations remain selective extensions of that position, using familiar 6397 garments as surfaces for collective expression without turning the main line into event merchandise.
