Introduction
Stella Ishii is a Japanese fashion executive, showroom founder and designer whose career connects Comme des Garçons, Staff International, The NEWS and 6397. Born in Yokohama, she developed a lasting uniform of jeans and simple knitwear during her university years in Japan. She entered fashion through press and communications work for Rei Kawakubo at Comme des Garçons, remaining with the company for approximately fourteen years and working across Japan, Europe and the United States.
Ishii later joined Staff International and became president of its American operation, where she handled sales, press and distribution for designers including Martin Margiela and Vivienne Westwood. Her role was commercial and representational rather than design authorship, but it made her an important intermediary between European independent fashion and the North American market. In 2000 she founded The NEWS in New York, combining showroom sales, public relations and long-term brand development for labels including Sacai, The Row, Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Common Projects.
In 2013 Ishii founded 6397 as an extension of The NEWS and a translation of her own denim-based wardrobe into a consumer label. She remains its founder and lead designer, shaping relaxed jeans, workwear-derived separates and graphic pieces through an in-house process informed by the women around the showroom. Her later work has also joined fashion with advocacy and art through projects with Noah, the ACLU and Creative Growth Art Center.
Design ethos
Ishii begins with clothes that can be worn repeatedly and become more specific to their owner. Her denim philosophy accepts wrinkles, slouch and unevenness as evidence of life rather than defects to be corrected. Twisted seams and relaxed fits resist the idea that jeans should sit perfectly, while restrained shirts, knits and jackets support the same uniform without competing for attention.
Her design judgement is inseparable from her showroom experience. Ishii evaluates a garment through its construction, emotional clarity and ability to remain useful beyond a selling season. 6397 therefore avoids a fixed image of femininity or a formal menswear division, allowing scale, fabric and styling to determine who wears each piece. Collaboration enters when it extends that community-led method, not as a substitute for the core wardrobe.

Career history
2025
6397 and Creative Growth Art Center staged an artist-led runway fundraiser at The NEWS on 30 October 2025. Artists customised 6397 garments for immediate sale, with all proceeds supporting Creative Growth; the collaboration later extended to Japanese distribution.

Stella Ishii has directed 6397’s design since its 2013 foundation. Her continuing tenure centres denim, relaxed uniforms and an in-house working process shaped by The NEWS showroom community.
2013
Stella Ishii founded 6397 in New York in 2013 as an internal label connected to The NEWS showroom. The new brand translated her denim-based working uniform and the wardrobes of women around the showroom into a consumer collection.
