Overview
Christian Kimber is an independent Melbourne menswear label founded by Christian and Renuka Kimber. The business began taking shape after the pair returned to Australia in 2011, with the Christian Kimber trading name recorded that December and a small footwear collection taking orders by February 2013. Early releases centred on loafers, chukka boots, dress shoes, Italian-made trainers and soft accessories, establishing a direct and selective wholesale business before the first permanent store opened in Fitzroy in 2016.
Clothing entered the offer by 2016 and developed into the first fully documented menswear collection in 2018. From that point the house expanded around relaxed tailoring, knitwear, outerwear and casual wardrobe pieces designed for Australian climate and everyday use. Christian Kimber won the National Designer Award in 2019, while the retail model grew through Armadale in 2020 and a Little Collins Street flagship in 2024 with alterations, customisation and tailoring consultation built into the space.
The current house combines seasonal runway and campaign collections with longer-running wardrobe programmes. The Permanent Collection keeps recurring essentials in circulation, the Naples Made Collection concentrates limited handmade and hand-finished ready-to-wear, and made-to-measure appointments extend the tailoring service through individual fittings. Christian remains lead designer and Renuka co-founder, strategic leader and presentation producer, with the label operating from Melbourne and manufacturing across Portugal and several Italian centres.
Philosophy
Christian Kimber develops menswear through ease, proportion and familiarity. The early footwear translated travel, architecture and Australian settings into colour, surface and classic shoe forms; the clothing that followed applied the same restraint to softly constructed blazers, chore jackets, relaxed trousers, polos, knitwear and outerwear. Tailoring is allowed to sit close to daily clothing, with softer shoulders, practical pockets and fabrics chosen for movement and climate.
Material and manufacture carry much of the distinction. Italian wools, cottons, corduroy, cashmere, suede, shearling and leather appear across seasonal collections, while garment dyeing gives shirts, trousers and jackets a softer, already-lived surface. Current production is distributed between Portugal and Italy, with Porto used for a substantial share of ready-to-wear and specialist work in Naples, Milan, Tuscany and Verona supporting tailoring, bags, accessories and leather outerwear.
The label’s product logic has become increasingly continuous. Recurring pieces such as the Fitzroy chore jacket, Apollo blazer and Alcott raglan sweater move between core and seasonal fabrics, allowing familiar shapes to develop through cloth and colour. The same approach carries into made-to-measure and Resort '27, where softened tailoring, natural fibres and warm-weather layering extended the wardrobe without abandoning the house’s practical Melbourne base.
