Overview
Elie Saab is a Lebanese couturier who launched his atelier in Beirut in the early 1980s, soon after teaching himself dressmaking as a teenager. Born in 1964 and raised in a large family, he began sewing at age nine and later briefly studied fashion in Paris before returning to Lebanon to open his studio with a team of 15. Saab gained international attention for his bridal and evening gowns rich with lace, pearls, crystals and embroidery. His creations have graced royals and celebrities alike, making him the first Middle Eastern designer to dress an Oscar winner when Halle Berry wore his burgundy gown in 2002.
The brand expanded with ready‑to‑wear and accessories lines produced in Milan and presented on the Paris runway. Saab became a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in 2006, solidifying his status within the haute couture calendar. He also introduced perfumes, eyewear and accessories lines, making the brand a full lifestyle house and creating additional revenue streams.
Today the maison operates ateliers in Beirut, Milan and Paris, and its garments are stocked in boutiques and department stores worldwide. Saab’s aesthetic combines Western glamour with Middle Eastern opulence, offering bridal, couture and ready‑to‑wear collections that are renowned for their feminine silhouettes and intricate handwork.
Philosophy
Elie Saab’s design philosophy celebrates femininity, elegance and meticulous craftsmanship. He aims to make women feel like royalty through gowns that emphasise graceful lines, hourglass shapes and luxuriant embellishment. Each piece is constructed using delicate materials – Chantilly lace, silk chiffon, tulle – and adorned with hand‑sewn beads, crystals and sequins. Saab’s work draws inspiration from both European couture traditions and Lebanese heritage, blending ornate detail with contemporary silhouettes to create timeless glamour.
Beyond creating opulent gowns, the brand seeks to tell stories of modern women who exude confidence and grace. Saab emphasises a dialogue between East and West, combining Mediterranean warmth with Parisian sophistication. He has invested in training programmes in Lebanon to sustain couture skills and supports initiatives that empower women through entrepreneurship. Perfumes and accessories reflect the same attention to detail as his gowns, allowing a wider audience to experience his world.
Saab believes in the transformative power of clothing and in the emotional resonance of craftsmanship. His ready‑to‑wear collections translate couture sensibilities into daywear, while maintaining an emphasis on quality. Through everything he designs, Saab strives to capture an ethereal, romantic mood, inviting wearers to experience the fantasy and artistry of haute couture in their own lives.
