Introduction
Elie Saab is a world-renowned Lebanese fashion designer based between Beirut and Paris. He launched his eponymous label in 1982 at the age of eighteen, quickly becoming a leader in the world of high-glamour evening wear and bridal couture. Saab achieved historic international recognition in 2002 as the first Lebanese designer to dress an Academy Award winner, famously wardrobing Halle Berry. He is a permanent member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, cementing his status as one of the most significant figures in the global luxury landscape.
Saab’s designs are synonymous with red-carpet glamour and Middle Eastern opulence, and his house has expanded to include ready-to-wear, accessories, and fragrance. His work is celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and its ability to enhance the female silhouette through delicate, artisanal techniques. He remains the active head of his brand, continuing to define the standards of modern couture from his ateliers in Beirut and his headquarters in Paris.
Design ethos
Exquisite craftsmanship and the mastery of 'cutting to the curve' define a design language that prioritises the enhancement of the female figure through 'ultra-glamour'. The aesthetic is characterised by the use of intricate hand-embroidery and the application of rare lace, gemstones, crystals, and pearls. These elements are often applied to translucent and ethereal fabrics such as silk tulle and organza, creating a romantic 'red carpet' look that appears both opulent and weightless.
A fusion of Middle Eastern opulence and Western silhouettes results in a visual language that celebrates a soft and feminine ideal of beauty. Recurring formal concerns include the use of delicate draping, soft edges, and floor-sweeping lengths that emphasise grace and movement. The design process is focused on the meticulous detail of the 'fatto a mano' (hand-made) tradition, ensuring that each garment functions as a piece of wearable art. This ethos avoids the avant-garde in favour of a timeless and idealised vision of elegance, catering to a global elite who prioritise sophisticated and highly decorative couture.
