IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE

Overview

IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE is the house’s lighting project with Artemide, developed from the folding, material and object logic around Reality Lab. and 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE. In Japanese, “in-ei” [陰影 • いんえい] suggests shadow, shade or nuance, a fitting name for a project built around the interplay of light and dark. It belongs to the design-beyond-clothing layer of the Miyake universe: a product-design project where cloth-adjacent thinking moves into folded structure, geometric shadow and interior space. Its lamps are not fashion objects in disguise, but folded forms that carry Miyake’s questions into another discipline.

The collaboration with Artemide is central to that identity. IN-EI depends on the meeting of Miyake’s research culture with a specialist lighting company’s technical knowledge, giving the project more substance than a decorative brand extension. Within the wider Issey Miyake system, it shows how the house’s methods can leave the wardrobe entirely and still remain recognisably Miyake: precise, transformable, materially alert and quietly theatrical.

Philosophy

IN-EI ISSEY MIYAKE translates folding into illumination. Its philosophy begins with the movement from flat material to sculptural object, but the final subject is light itself: how it is shaped, softened, contained and released through structure. Recycled material research, geometric construction and shadow become part of the same design language, turning a lamp into a small architecture of folds.

The project’s intelligence lies in refusing the usual hierarchy between fashion collaboration and product design. Artemide’s role is not a manufacturer’s footnote; it is part of the work’s technical spine. IN-EI belongs beside 132 5. and Reality Lab. as another expression of Miyake’s wider inquiry into transformation, but it sits outside fashion chronology, in the more liminal territory where object, atmosphere and engineering meet.
