Overview
John Richmond, born in 1961 in Manchester, studied fashion at Kingston Polytechnic and launched his own label in 1987 after freelancing for houses such as Emporio Armani and Fiorucci. His early collaborations included the punk‑influenced line Richmond‑Cornejo with designer Maria Cornejo. Richmond gained global attention for his rebellious aesthetic that fused rock ’n’ roll energy with refined tailoring.
He dressed music icons like David Bowie, Madonna and Mick Jagger, and his shows in the 1990s became legendary for their soundtrack and street‑inspired styling. The brand operates under three main lines—John Richmond, Richmond X and Richmond Denim—and has boutiques and showrooms worldwide thanks to a partnership with entrepreneur Saverio Moschillo.
The label’s collections encompass menswear, womenswear and accessories, often featuring leather jackets, slim‑cut suits and graphic tees. Over the decades Richmond has balanced his punk roots with Italian craftsmanship, creating garments that convey attitude without sacrificing quality. He continues to present collections in Milan while collaborating on projects in music and art, maintaining the brand’s identity as a bridge between cultural worlds.
Philosophy
John Richmond’s philosophy is encapsulated by his motto “Destroy, Disorientate, Disorder,” reflecting a desire to challenge convention and push creative boundaries. He believes fashion should be authentic and personal, drawing inspiration from subcultures, rock music and street life. Richmond often reinterprets classic tailoring with punk details—studs, distressed leather, unexpected proportions—to create a dialogue between rebellion and sophistication. He has stated that staying true to one’s creative DNA is more important than following trends, and his designs aim to empower individuals to express their identity confidently.
The brand also highlights the intersection of British sensibility and Italian craftsmanship.
Richmond moved to Milan early in his career to realise his vision, coining the tagline “Born in England, made in Italy.” He sees fashion as storytelling, where each collection narrates a moment in culture and invites the audience to participate. By merging music, art and fashion, John Richmond cultivates an irreverent yet elegant aesthetic that celebrates diversity and refuses to conform.
