Layer-0

Layer-0 is an independent Italian artisanal label founded by designer and pattern maker Alessio Zero in Perugia. The project began in 2007, with the Perugia workshop operating from around 2008, and developed through a tightly controlled cycle of garments, footwear and specialist wholesale presentations. An early conceptual runway, Feel Your Touch, set out the label’s interest in touch, movement and the physical relationship between clothing and the wearer.

The house is organised around Zero’s pattern-making practice. Recurrent footwear lasts, tailoring blocks and trouser patterns return in different leathers, wools, linens, jerseys and knit structures, giving Layer-0 continuity without requiring a complete visual reset each season. The workshop has also supported bounded external projects, including a 100-pair footwear production for Maurizio Altieri’s Avantindietro Field and a long-running programme of retailer-specific development with Alan Bilzerian.

Layer-0 remains active in Perugia. Its workshop handles pattern development, cutting, leather preparation, sewing and finishing across garments and footwear, while specialist retailers continue to carry season-coded tailoring, boots, derbies, knitwear and accessories. The official FW26 offer is divided into garment and footwear catalogues, extending the same workshop-led product system into the current season.

Layer-0 begins with pattern. Zero trained as a modellista and approaches clothing through the engineering of shape, internal construction and the way a garment settles around the body. Complex seam placement, asymmetry and carefully resolved interiors are treated as structural decisions, while recurring blocks provide a stable base for material and proportion to change over time.

Leather is central to the practice, from horse and cordovan footwear to outerwear and early experiments in which fine strips of leather were worked into knitted structures. The footwear programme spans repeated derby and boot families, including Goodyear-welted and limited hand-welted constructions, while garments move between dense leather, tailored wool, linen, jersey and hand-knit surfaces. Material treatment is used to alter weight, texture and ageing without obscuring the underlying pattern.

The workshop’s small-batch model also shapes the design process. Certain products are developed with specialist retailers through uncommon materials, dye treatments or tightly bounded allocations, while established pattern blocks remain recognisable across deliveries. This iterative rhythm gives Layer-0 a wardrobe logic built through construction, material change and continued use instead of rapid stylistic replacement.
