Introduction
Alessio Zero is an Italian designer, pattern maker and atelier practitioner from Perugia, where he founded Layer-0 in the late 2000s. His formation centred on technical studies, training as a modellista and an apprenticeship with a master tailor, giving him direct command of pattern drafting and garment construction before the label entered regular production.
Zero began developing Layer-0 in 2007 and established its Perugia workshop around 2008. By 2009 the label was already in its third season and had presented Feel Your Touch, a conceptual runway built around sensory perception and the connection between clothing and the body. The workshop subsequently expanded into a stable system of footwear, tailoring, trousers, knitwear and leather garments while maintaining a specialist international retail network.
Alongside the main label, Zero has used the workshop for selected external and retailer-led projects. He produced a bounded footwear run for Maurizio Altieri’s Avantindietro Field project, developed recurring exclusives with Alan Bilzerian and undertook leather-garment production for Guidi. He continues to lead Layer-0’s design, pattern-making and workshop practice in Perugia.
Design ethos
Zero works from pattern construction as the starting point of the design. His training as a modellista appears in complex seam systems, asymmetrical blocks and interiors that are resolved with the same attention as the exterior. The garment is treated as an engineered object whose balance, movement and fit emerge from the pattern itself.
Material experimentation develops inside those stable structures. Horse leather, shell and reverse cordovan, linen, wool, jersey and hand-knit surfaces recur across footwear and clothing, while treatments alter density, surface and ageing. Early hand-knitted leather pieces and later Goodyear-welted footwear demonstrate the same interest in pushing a material without losing control of construction.
Zero also works iteratively. Derby and boot families, blazers and trouser blocks return in new materials and retailer-specific versions, allowing the workshop to refine forms instead of replacing them each season. Limited production and close collaboration with specialist stockists make manufacturing, product development and the final retail object part of one continuous design process.

Career history
2020
From 2020 onward, Layer-0 continued a code-led product system across footwear, tailoring, trousers, knitwear and accessories. By 2026 the Perugia workshop remained active across patterning, cutting, leather preparation, sewing and finishing, with FW26 garment and footwear catalogues extending the same approach.
2018
By 2018, Layer-0’s Perugia workshop was producing leather jackets for Guidi. The relationship extended Alessio Zero’s pattern-making and heavy-leather construction into external manufacturing while Layer-0 remained an independent label.
2018
Layer-0 marked the tenth anniversary of its Perugia workshop in Fall 2018. The Paris wholesale collection was described as the label’s twenty-first collection shown in the city, reflecting a decade of regular workshop-led seasonal development.
2009
Around 2009–2010, Alessio Zero’s Perugia workshop produced a limited run of 100 pairs for Maurizio Altieri’s Avantindietro Field project. The bounded collaboration demonstrated Layer-0’s footwear-making capability while keeping Altieri’s project authorship separate from Zero’s independent label.
2009
By May 2009 Layer-0 was in its third season and had presented Feel Your Touch, an early conceptual runway centred on sensory perception. Masked models, media noise and a guiding rope made touch the organising device for a collection that also demonstrated Zero’s intricate pattern work and material experimentation.
2008
From around 2008, Alan Bilzerian’s Boston store developed recurring products with Alessio Zero in Perugia. Dyed tailoring, specialist leathers and footwear made retailer co-development a durable part of Layer-0’s small-batch wholesale model.
2008
Layer-0’s Perugia workshop became operational around 2008, giving Alessio Zero a permanent base for pattern development and making. The workshop allowed clothing and footwear to develop within the same technical practice and supported the label’s recurring seasonal output.
2007
Alessio Zero has remained the principal creative and technical authority of Layer-0 since its foundation. His role joins design with pattern development and workshop practice across garments, footwear and selected collaborative production.
