Overview
Onitsuka Tiger dates back to 1949, when former military officer Kihachiro Onitsuka founded Onitsuka Co. in Kobe, Japan, with the aim of rebuilding post‑war youth through sport. Believing that physical activity could foster a sound mind and spirit—expressed by the Latin motto *Anima Sana In Corpore Sano*—Onitsuka set out to create footwear that would help young athletes achieve their potential.
In 1951 he designed a basketball shoe featuring a suction‑cup sole inspired by an octopus tentacle, providing grip that helped a high‑school team win a championship. This innovation established Onitsuka’s reputation for combining functionality with inventiveness. Over the next decades the company produced running shoes worn by marathon champions and developed the iconic Tiger stripe that remains a brand symbol.
The company later rebranded as ASICS, an acronym of the same Latin motto, and grew into a global sportswear group. However, the Onitsuka Tiger label was relaunched in the early 2000s as a heritage lifestyle brand, revisiting classic 1960s and 1970s silhouettes like the Mexico 66 and Colorado 85. Today Onitsuka Tiger combines Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing trainers, clothing and accessories that merge vintage inspiration with modern comfort.
Collaborations with designers and streetwear labels have broadened its appeal, and the brand operates flagship stores worldwide. Despite changes, it retains the core values of quality, innovation and wellness that defined Onitsuka’s original vision.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Onitsuka Tiger is rooted in the idea that sport can transform lives. Kihachiro Onitsuka founded his company with a social mission: to support the health and morale of Japanese youth after the devastation of World War II. He believed that shoes should not only perform well but also inspire users to strive for a sound mind in a sound body. This belief drives a focus on functional design, durability and comfort. The suction‑cup sole, the lightweight running shoes that became iconic in marathons and the later development of shock‑absorbing materials all stem from this purpose‑led innovation.
As the brand evolved, it maintained a commitment to craftsmanship and detail. Modern Onitsuka Tiger products reinterpret archival designs using premium leather, suede and canvas, paired with updated soles for improved comfort. Collaborations with high‑fashion designers and streetwear labels highlight its versatility and cultural relevance, yet the brand remains anchored in the idea of wellness.
By combining heritage with modernity, Onitsuka Tiger continues to promote the motto that inspired its creation, encouraging wearers to pursue physical and mental well‑being through style and movement. This blend of performance and heritage demonstrates that sportswear can be both stylish and meaningful.
