Overview
Milan Fashion Week, established in 1958 by the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, is a cornerstone of the global fashion circuit, known for showcasing the pinnacle of Italian luxury and craftsmanship. Held twice a year (February/March for fall/winter and September for spring/summer collections), it serves as the platform for Italy’s most esteemed fashion houses—such as Armani, Versace, Prada, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana—to debut their collections to the world. Milan’s ascent as a fashion capital took off in the 1970s and 80s when designers like Giorgio Armani and Gianni Versace gained international fame, bringing a new era of glamour and “Made in Italy” excellence.
The city’s fashion week is synonymous with polished, sophisticated designs and grand runway productions; iconic moments include the supermodel era of the early 90s, exemplified by Gianni Versace’s 1991 show where the era’s top models walked together in an unforgettable finale to “Freedom! ’90”. Milan Fashion Week also nurtures emerging designers through initiatives like Milano Moda Graduate and showcases avant-garde talents at events like White Milano. With a strong industry infrastructure (its trade fairs and showrooms are vital for business), Milan Fashion Week not only sets seasonal trends in womenswear and menswear, but also reinforces Italy’s status as a leader in quality, style, and the business of fashion.
