Introduction
Alexandre Plokhov is a Russian-born fashion designer born in Naro-Fominsk in 1967. After moving to the United States, he developed his technical grounding in tailoring and menswear and founded Alexandre Plokhov Atelier in Chicago in the early 1990s. He later worked as a menswear pattern maker at Marc Jacobs before co-founding Cloak in New York in 1999, building a reputation for dark, precise menswear with strong military and subcultural references.
After Cloak closed, Plokhov became menswear design director at Versace from 2007 to 2010 and then revived independent work under his own name. Helmut Lang brought him in as menswear design director in 2013; his first public lineup appeared through Barneys in February 2014, and he remained responsible for the category through early 2017. His final securely dated public project was the January 2017 Travis Scott capsule, a 19-piece collection combining new graphics with selected references to founder-era Helmut Lang material.
Plokhov’s Helmut Lang role overlapped his namesake label and a 2014 UNIQLO guest project. After leaving the brand he continued through consulting, studio work and education, later joining the Savannah College of Art and Design as a professor. His career has repeatedly moved between independent authorship, large-house menswear and technical studio roles.
Design ethos
Plokhov’s work is rooted in menswear construction: narrow tailoring, elongated coats, leather, military garments, boots and disciplined layering. The severity is softened by wear, texture and references drawn from music and subculture, giving the clothes a lived-in quality even when the cut is exact.
At Helmut Lang he directed menswear as a distinct category. The collections used tailoring, utility garments and footwear to reconnect the label with a harder urban vocabulary, culminating in the Travis Scott capsule, where Texas imagery, graphic work and archive references were integrated into denim, leather and outerwear.
His experience as a pattern maker remains visible across every stage of the career. A garment’s line is established through construction first, with graphics, distressing and cultural references added to a stable underlying form. That discipline has given him a recognisable hand across experimental labels and commercial houses.
