Introduction
Alix Browne is an American fashion editor and creative director whose career has moved through magazines, books and brand image. She was a founding editor of V, later worked at W and became deputy style editor at T: The New York Times Style Magazine, developing a long record of commissioning fashion photography, writing and cultural stories.
Helmut Lang announced Browne as its second editor-in-residence on 17 January 2018, succeeding Isabella Burley the following month. Her public work for the label extended through at least August 2018 and covered editorial direction, campaigns, graphic and community projects and product launches. The role sat alongside the company’s permanent design team and the emerging menswear leadership of Mark Howard Thomas. Browne held authority over image and cultural framing; seasonal clothing remained with the design team.
Browne has continued as an editor, writer and creative consultant, working across fashion publishing and visual culture. Her Helmut Lang period forms part of a career centred on how fashion is photographed, written about and assembled into a public identity.
Design ethos
Browne works through editorial sequencing: images, typography, casting, writing and objects are arranged so a brand or publication develops a recognisable tone across many separate commissions. Her strength lies in creating coherence and preserving the individual character of the contributors.
At Helmut Lang she inherited an editorial structure already built around rotating viewpoints and extended it through campaigns, graphic projects and community-led imagery. Product launches took place inside that frame, with the clothing studio retaining its own design authority.
Her magazine background gives this work a strong sense of pace and juxtaposition. A fashion image can sit beside art, reportage or an everyday cultural reference, allowing the identity to accumulate through repetition and editing across different media.
