Introduction
Amanda Harlech is a British creative consultant whose fashion career developed through a long collaboration with John Galliano before she joined Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel in 1997. Her earlier work connected Galliano’s independent label, Givenchy and the beginning of his Dior tenure.
At Chanel, Harlech acted as an intellectual and visual sounding board across collections, mood, styling and campaigns, also contributing to Lagerfeld’s work at Fendi. The collaboration continued until Lagerfeld’s death in 2019.
Design ethos
Harlech works through reference, narrative and critical response. Literature, historical image and character supply ways to test a collection’s mood before it reaches styling or campaign form.
The role is collaborative rather than line-authoring. Its influence appears in the coherence between garment, setting and persona, especially within the theatrical systems built by Galliano and Lagerfeld.
