Introduction
Andrew Gn was appointed Balmain artistic director of ready-to-wear on 25 June 1997 while Oscar de la Renta continued to lead haute couture. His first Balmain ready-to-wear output was reported later that year, and the house ended the relationship in 1998.
Design ethos
Gn’s Balmain record is structurally important because it demonstrates separate ready-to-wear authority inside the de la Renta couture period. The surviving research does not support couture or house-wide control.
