Introduction
Anne-Marie Colban is a French director of Charvet and the daughter of Denis Colban, the proprietor who acquired controlling stock in the house in 1965. She worked in architecture before entering the family business and, with her brother Jean-Claude, was leading Charvet after their father’s death in 1994.
Anne-Marie’s documented work is strongly client-facing. Her role is strongly client-facing, while Jean-Claude concentrates heavily on designs and fabrics, giving the sibling partnership complementary responsibilities without reducing either to a narrow departmental title. She has served as directeur général of CHARVET PLACE VENDOME since 20 January 2006 and of ATELIERS CHARVET since August 2006.
She remained directeur général after Chanel acquired Charvet in July 2026. Her continued leadership preserves the personal service culture of the house during a change of ownership that also installed Bruno Pavlovsky as statutory president. Charvet’s current structure therefore keeps the Colban siblings inside day-to-day direction while operating under Chanel control.
Design ethos
Anne-Marie Colban’s contribution is grounded in the client encounter: understanding how a person wants a shirt, suit, pyjama or accessory to fit into an existing wardrobe, then translating that requirement through Charvet’s extensive fabric and service options. The work gives individual preference a central place inside a house whose forms are deliberately stable.
Her architectural background is compatible with a practice attentive to proportion, fit and the organisation of choices, and her principal role at Charvet is leadership and client direction, not sole garment authorship. At Charvet, creative value is distributed across fabric development, fittings, pattern work, cutting, tailoring and specialist assembly.
The continuity of that service is itself part of the house’s design culture. Customers can return to established patterns, alter details or move between prêt-à-porter, demi-mesure and sur-mesure, making long-term knowledge of the wearer as important as the introduction of new cloth.
