Introduction
April Crichton is a Scottish designer educated at Edinburgh College of Art and St Martin’s School of Art, graduating in 1989. She joined Sonia Rykiel early in her career and remained for roughly twenty-two years, moving through the studio and taking substantial responsibility for Sonia by Sonia Rykiel before her formal appointment as mainline Creative Director on 30 September 2011.
Her Rykiel leadership emerged from long internal knowledge, with Spring/Summer 2012 presented alongside Nathalie Rykiel before Crichton took sole public responsibility. After leaving during the 2012 ownership transition, she worked with Marc Jacobs in New York and co-founded La Fetiche in 2017, developing the label between Glasgow and Paris with Orély Forestier.
Design ethos
Crichton’s practice is rooted in studio continuity, colour and the translation of house codes into workable product. Years spent on Rykiel’s diffusion line trained her to adjust knitwear, graphics and playful proportion for a broader price and retail context without treating accessibility as aesthetic dilution.
Her brief mainline tenure favoured collective bows and visible continuity with the Rykiel family. The later move into an independent Glasgow–Paris label retained an interest in cross-border making and characterful dress, placing craft relationships and the energy of the garment ahead of a celebrity-designer persona.
