Introduction
Armand-Albert Rateau was a French architect, decorator and object designer who began collaborating with Jeanne Lanvin in 1920. He became her partner or co-founder in Lanvin Décoration, formally created in 1921, and worked on the Théâtre Daunou, Lanvin residences, retail interiors, furniture and objects.
Rateau’s later project-specific contributions included the spherical black bottle used for Arpège in 1927. His authority was confined to decoration, interiors and objects; it did not extend to couture design or perfume composition.
Design ethos
Rateau combined stylised natural forms, bronze, carved surfaces and archaeological reference with a precise command of interior atmosphere. His rooms were conceived as ensembles in which furniture, textiles, lighting and objects reinforced one another.
The Lanvin collaboration was productive because responsibilities remained distinct. Jeanne Lanvin brought colour, textile knowledge and patronage; Rateau translated that sensibility into architecture and objects with an independent material language.
