Barnabé Hardy

Barnabé Hardy is a French menswear designer from Tours whose career developed alongside Nicolas Ghesquière before moving into independent leather and house direction. He worked with Ghesquière at Callaghan and then at Balenciaga, where he helped establish and design menswear through 2007. In parallel he launched Minets par Barnabé in 2001 and later built an eponymous label around leather jackets, with international distribution and collaborations including 3 Suisses and Karl Lagerfeld.

Carven appointed Hardy creative director of menswear in January 2015 as the house separated men’s and women’s leadership after Guillaume Henry’s departure. His first Carven collection was Spring/Summer 2016, followed by Fall/Winter 2016–17 and Spring/Summer 2017. The company placed menswear on standby on 29 July 2016 and Hardy left after roughly eighteen months.

Hardy subsequently contributed to the launch of Isabel Marant menswear for Spring/Summer 2018 and continued to work through design and consultancy. Across these roles, menswear, leather, movement and the refinement of casual clothing form the consistent centre of his practice.

Hardy’s vocabulary starts with leather and an urban male wardrobe. He has described his preferred style as urban, shaped and luxurious, and his own label treated the leather jacket as a field for cut, finish and controlled embellishment.

At Carven he introduced greater physical movement into the men’s line through lightweight suits, sports-derived materials, elastic construction and footwear designed for an active presentation format. Tailoring stayed present, with comfort and mobility built directly into the silhouette. That mixture of leather expertise, sportswear and precise shape also suited his later work on Isabel Marant menswear.
