Introduction
Benjamin A. Huseby is a Norwegian photographer, artist and fashion designer born in Oslo in 1978 to a Norwegian mother and Pakistani father. He moved to London in 1997 to study fine art at Chelsea College of Art and began contributing photography to Dazed & Confused during the same period. He later completed an MFA at the National Academy of Art in Oslo and built an international photography career across magazines including i-D, Vogue, AnOther, Fantastic Man, 032c and other fashion and art publications.
Huseby developed a parallel art practice through photography, video and installation, with exhibitions in London, Berlin, Oslo, Tokyo and other cities. His work frequently addressed performance, portraiture, identity and the instability of the photographed self. That background brought an established visual network and a mature image language into GmbH when he founded the Berlin label with Serhat Işık in 2016.
At GmbH, Huseby shares full creative direction with Işık and has also photographed key campaigns, including Europe Endless and Rare Earth. The pair expanded the label through Paris runway presentations, film, music, womenswear and collaborations before returning the runway to Berlin in 2024. Huseby and Işık also served as joint creative directors of Trussardi from 2021 to 2023, keeping their independent label active throughout the Milan appointment.
Design ethos
Huseby approaches fashion through image, casting and cultural context as well as clothing. His photographic background gives particular weight to who appears in a campaign, how bodies are framed and how a collection is placed inside a wider visual world. Early GmbH imagery used migrant and diasporic casting to claim space within luxury fashion, often drawing on the polished language of established campaigns and redirecting it toward communities that had rarely occupied those images.
His art practice also informs GmbH’s comfort with film, sound and performance. Campaign photography, digital films, live scores and runway staging are treated as authored parts of a collection’s public life. Huseby’s collaboration with Işık gives these media a direct relationship to pattern, silhouette and material, keeping the label’s image system close to the clothes.
Across photography and fashion, Huseby returns to identity, belonging, masculinity, sexuality and the politics of representation. His strongest work gives these subjects physical form through casting, posture, clothing and atmosphere. GmbH’s later historical and political collections extend the same attention toward memory and public visibility, including the pre-war Berlin references of Desire Paths.
