Introduction
Brandon Maxwell is an American fashion designer, stylist and image-maker born in Longview, Texas, on 18 September 1984. After beginning studies in painting at Marymount Manhattan College, he returned to Texas and studied photocommunications at St. Edward’s University in Austin, which identifies him as a 2008 graduate. He moved back to New York in 2009 and entered fashion through styling, first assisting Deborah Afshani and then working with Edward Enninful and Nicola Formichetti.
Through Formichetti’s studio Maxwell became closely involved with Lady Gaga’s wardrobe and by 2012 was functioning as the principal fashion director for her image. The role was primarily curatorial and directional: he built looks, managed commissions and coordinated existing fashion rather than claiming design authorship over garments made by other houses. During the later part of that period he began draping his own clothes, and in September 2015 he founded the Brandon Maxwell label in New York, presenting its debut Spring 2016 runway at Mr Chow. The house received the CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear in 2016 and the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2019.
Maxwell has continued to lead his namesake house while maintaining a separate mass-market design role. Walmart appointed him Creative Director for Free Assembly and Scoop in March 2021, and he remained in that position in 2026. His public career has also included judging Project Runway, although he is not part of the programme’s current 2026 judging panel. At his own label, the post-2023 period has concentrated increasingly on everyday American sportswear, knitwear, denim and tailoring, alongside the eveningwear that first established his reputation.
Design ethos
Maxwell works from a visual and bodily understanding of clothes, shaped outside a conventional sketch-first design education. His photography training made light, movement and camera angle central to his judgement of proportion, while years of styling taught him to consider the garment as part of a complete image. He has repeatedly described draping directly on the form as fundamental to his process, and the resulting silhouettes rely on controlled line: close tailoring, strong shoulders, long skirts, exposed waists and evening shapes whose impact comes from cut as much as embellishment.
The namesake label has steadily widened that vocabulary. Its first years concentrated on monochrome tailoring and red-carpet eveningwear; by the late 2010s saturated colour, cinched suiting and fluid sportswear were equally important, often presented through large-scale runway environments. The post-pandemic work became quieter and more tactile. By Pre-Fall 2023 and the collections that followed, Maxwell was explicitly renovating the brand around denim, knitwear, trousers, outerwear and pieces intended for repeated daily use, without abandoning precise dresses or formal tailoring.
His Walmart work demonstrates a parallel interest in accessibility, but it operates through a different product and manufacturing system from the luxury house. At Free Assembly and Scoop, Maxwell directs broad seasonal assortments across mass-market categories; at Brandon Maxwell, the emphasis remains on controlled luxury construction, specialist materials and a smaller wardrobe proposition. Across both scales, the recurring concern is legibility: clear silhouettes, cohesive colour, practical movement and clothing that creates a deliberate image without depending on excessive ornament.

Career history
2026
The Fall 2026 format change made presentation pragmatism part of the wider wardrobe renovation, with the seasonal collection continuing through a studio lookbook instead of a physical runway.
2025
The Signature Handbag Collection created the house’s first durable named handbag programme, formalising a category that had previously appeared through individual bag designs on the runway.
2025
The anniversary connected the label’s first decade without turning Spring 2026 into a retrospective collection. Maxwell framed the milestone as forward-looking, maintaining the wardrobe renovation already under way.
2023
The post-2023 phase reduces dependence on occasion dressing and runway spectacle in favour of repeat wardrobe use. Tailoring and eveningwear remain present, but the commercial and creative centre of gravity shifts towards daily separates and tactile sportswear.
2023
The Via Riyadh opening introduced a dedicated physical retail setting for the brand and gave the house a permanent environment for presenting seasonal clothing and localised retail selections.
2022
The Fila project was a defined guest-design collaboration rather than a new Brandon Maxwell division. It placed the designer’s fashion vocabulary inside an established performance-sportswear system.
2020
The 2020 AAFA recognition closed the house’s first major period of institutional consolidation. It followed the Fall 2020 American Museum of Natural History runway, the culmination of the pre-pandemic theatrical phase.
2020
The capsule briefly extended the house’s tailoring into menswear. The capsule remained a limited market test and did not develop into a permanent men’s line.
2019
The 2019 CFDA award was the label’s strongest domestic design recognition. It arrived after several seasons in which the house had expanded decisively beyond red-carpet eveningwear into a complete sportswear wardrobe.
2018
The MAC collaboration was the house’s first significant beauty project. It extended Maxwell’s image-making vocabulary into cosmetics without establishing a permanent internal beauty division.
2017
The period widened the house from an intimate eveningwear atelier into a broader American sportswear proposition. Large-format shows and major industry awards consolidated the label’s position before the pandemic interrupted the theatrical runway model.
2016
The 2016 CFDA Swarovski Award for Womenswear confirmed the label’s rapid establishment after its 2015 debut. It recognised Maxwell while the house was still developing its early monochrome tailoring and eveningwear vocabulary.
2015
Brandon Maxwell has led the label creatively since its 2015 foundation. His tenure spans the early eveningwear atelier, the theatrical runway years and the current wardrobe-led American sportswear phase.
2015
Maxwell established the eponymous New York luxury womenswear label in September 2015. The foundation formalised his transition from styling and image direction to principal garment authorship.
