Introduction
Céline Toledano, born Céline Engel, is a French collection director, fashion consultant, recruiter and educator who began her career as Collection Director for Karl Lagerfeld. She held the role from 1985 to 1993, managing the practical development of Lagerfeld’s seasonal ready-to-wear through the Bidermann, Revillon and early Dunhill periods.
After Karl Lagerfeld, Toledano worked for Martine Sitbon, Céline, Nina Ricci and Sonia Rykiel. Her career broadened from collection direction into recruitment and consulting, placing her across both the creative and organisational sides of Paris fashion.
Toledano later joined the consulting and executive-search agency m-O Conseil and became involved in fashion education. She co-directed advanced fashion-design study at the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne and later at the Institut Français de la Mode. At IFM she teaches professional and career-development strategy, bringing long studio experience into the preparation of younger designers.
Design ethos
Toledano’s contribution to fashion is rooted in collection direction: turning a designer’s ideas into a coherent, deliverable season. At Karl Lagerfeld this meant coordinating the movement from rapid sketches and atelier decisions into a ready-to-wear business operating across changing owners, manufacturers and international retailers. Her remit covered continuity, timing and the practical shape of the collection.
Her later work across several Paris houses extended that discipline into different product cultures. Collection direction demands judgement about proportion, range, fabrication and the relationship among individual pieces. Toledano’s career shows the creative value of editing and coordination inside a house, where the clarity of a season depends on many decisions made between drawing and delivery.
Recruitment and teaching became a continuation of the same expertise. At m-O Conseil and IFM she works with creative teams, specialist talent and professional development. The emphasis remains on how designers function inside a house, how responsibilities are defined and how individual ideas become collective fashion work.
