Introduction
Elide Morelli is an Italian couture maker associated with Valentino’s Rome ateliers from 1967 to 2021. As a sarta première, she belonged to the senior technical layer that translated a creative director’s drawings and fittings into finished haute couture garments.
Morelli later became an educator within La Bottega dell’Arte, Valentino’s internal couture academy at Palazzo Mignanelli. Her work links the founder-era atelier directly to the house’s current training system and the transfer of specialist sewing, draping and construction knowledge.
Design ethos
Morelli’s practice is grounded in interpretation, precision and transmission. The première must understand proportion and movement well enough to turn a sketch into a workable three-dimensional structure while coordinating the specialised labour of the atelier.
Her later teaching treated couture knowledge as a living technical system rather than an archive of finished dresses. Repetition, correction and close material handling preserve standards that cannot be reduced to industrial instructions.
