Introduction
Ermenegildo Giacomo Zegna was an Italian textile entrepreneur whose Trivero mill became the industrial origin of Zegna. Trained as a textile expert in Biella, he joined his brothers Edoardo and Mario and Costanzo Giardino Vitri in constituting Zegna & Giardino on 11 May 1910. He became the dominant entrepreneur through the partners’ exits and the 1941 dissolution of his remaining partnership with Mario, retaining the company name and most trademarks.
Zegna developed the business through fibre sourcing, modern machinery, marked fabrics, advertising and direct distribution to tailors. His programme extended beyond the factory into worker services, reforestation, hydroelectric infrastructure and the Panoramica road, though these projects also belonged to the paternalist and Fascist institutional context of their period. His sons Aldo and Angelo entered the partnership in 1944 and 1945 and had assumed practical control by the mid-1960s.
He died on 18 November 1966. The move into Zegna-branded industrial ready-to-wear followed under the second generation in 1968; he should therefore be understood primarily as a textile entrepreneur and industrial founder, not as a fashion creative director.
Design ethos
Zegna’s working method joined technical cloth-making to brand visibility. He invested in raw-material selection, finishing and quality control while using marks such as Electa and the later ADAM, SATIS and DEA structures to connect the mill directly with different classes of tailor.
His industrial thinking also treated territory as infrastructure. Reforestation, roads, energy, housing and welfare facilities supported production and community life, while also extending employer authority into the social environment. The modern house inherited this alignment of fibre, factory, landscape and distribution, even though its fashion system emerged after his active leadership.
