Introduction
Francesca Rubino is an Italian fashion designer born in Milan and raised between the city and Gaeta, her family’s place of origin. She studied fashion design at IED in Rome while working as a draughtswoman in Roberto Capucci’s haute-couture atelier, then began her professional career in Milan with Gianfranco Ferré’s studio for Dior. Those early roles joined formal drawing and atelier practice to the construction of a complete luxury collection.
Rubino spent more than two decades within Moschino’s creative team and became the designer and line creative director of Cheap and Chic. Her documented leadership includes the line’s move to the London runway from Autumn/Winter 2012–13 through its Spring/Summer 2014 presentation, while Rossella Jardini retained authority over the house as a whole. After Moschino, Rubino worked with the creative teams of Valentino and Armani before moving into independent practice.
Her current project, Rubino Gaeta, connects clothing to material reuse and social production. The collections use dormant fine fabrics, work with Cooperativa Alice’s tailoring workshops in Milan and Brescia and commission hand knitting from women artisans in Gaeta. The project places her own name and family geography at the centre of a career previously conducted largely inside other houses.
Design ethos
Rubino’s method begins with drawing and atelier translation. Training alongside Capucci and early work in Ferré’s Dior studio established a concern with how volume, line and decorative idea become technically resolved garments. Long experience in house design then added the coordination and repeatability needed for seasonal ready-to-wear.
At Cheap and Chic she worked within a younger, lower-priced line without reducing it to a simplified mainline. Bright colour, direct themes, familiar wardrobe forms and graphic styling gave the collections their own tempo, while the London move made that line-level authorship more visible within Moschino’s larger structure.
Rubino Gaeta changes the starting point from theme to available material and labour. Deadstock quantities determine what can be repeated, remnants encourage one-off solutions and hand crochet or knitting keeps regional knowledge inside the garment. Reuse is therefore a production constraint and design method, joined to a social system intended to support training, paid work and craft continuity.
