Introduction
Geraldo da Conceição is a Macau-born Canadian designer whose career developed through senior studio roles at Miu Miu, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton. At Louis Vuitton he became Design Director for women’s ready-to-wear under Marc Jacobs, experience that placed him within large, product-diverse luxury studios before he took an independent house lead.
Sonia Rykiel announced da Conceição as Creative Director on 21 September 2012, the first external recruitment to the role after First Heritage Brands acquired control. His tenure ran into early 2014 and ended with the Autumn/Winter 2014 collection, preceding Julie de Libran’s appointment that May.
Design ethos
Da Conceição brought a studio-trained approach to proportion and collection editing. At Sonia Rykiel he reduced the familiar exuberance into unstructured separates, minimalist tailoring and a palette weighted towards black, beige and quieter tonal combinations, using distance from the archive as a deliberate reset.
His remit also extended to image: M/M (Paris) and Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott developed graphic campaigns with references to mid-century poster design. The short tenure shows a designer applying the discipline of major-house womenswear studios to an eponymous brand whose strongest codes were inseparable from the founder’s personality.
