Introduction
Gianni Castiglioni is an Italian fashion executive and the co-founder of Marni. Before the label began, he led the Castiglioni family fur business in Milan, where its manufacturing capacity, supplier network and commercial experience provided the operating base for Consuelo Castiglioni’s early experiments with lighter, less formal fur and outerwear.
In 1994 he established Marni with Consuelo, taking responsibility for finance, production, distribution and business strategy while she directed the collections. The division of labour allowed the project to move from a fur-led line into ready-to-wear, accessories, menswear, direct retail and licensing without assigning garment authorship to the executive side of the company.
Gianni served as Marni chief executive until OTB completed its acquisition on 20 November 2015, when Ubaldo Minelli assumed the role; he remained president during the immediate transition and left with the founding family in October 2016. He later returned to a family fashion structure around Plan C, the independent label founded by his daughter Carolina Castiglioni in 2018.
Design ethos
Castiglioni’s contribution to fashion was operational rather than design-authored. He treated production knowledge as a platform for experimentation, using the family’s fur and garment infrastructure to support unusual materials and small early presentations, then expanding wholesale, retail and category systems as demand for the clothing grew.
His management kept creative authority with Consuelo while building the industrial framework around it. Direct stores, international distribution, menswear and licensed categories were added in stages, and the search for a strategic investor eventually brought OTB into the company. The record therefore belongs to the organisation of a design house: capital, manufacturing and logistics made the aesthetic programme durable, but did not replace its named creative author.
