Introduction
Gilles Rosier is a French designer whose career crosses couture studios, independent labels, major houses and design education. After studying law and fashion at the school of the Paris Chambre Syndicale, he worked at Pierre Balmain and Christian Dior under Marc Bohan, followed by Guy Paulin, and became Jean Paul Gaultier's first assistant in 1987.
In 1992 Rosier designed Léonard's first menswear collection and founded GR 816 with Claude Sabbah. He subsequently showed under his own name, received an ANDAM-supported Masters of Linen fellowship in 1997 and worked on Lacoste's leisure collection. At Kenzo he assumed responsibility for women's ready-to-wear after Kenzo Takada's retirement, presenting his first solo house collection for Autumn/Winter 2000–01 and remaining through Spring/Summer 2004.
Rosier later combined consulting and teaching with product design. By 2020 he was directing clothing design at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and had founded Éternel Parisien, a leather-goods label developed around local manufacture, vegetable-tanned hides and durable everyday objects.
Design ethos
Rosier's practice joins couture construction to reproducible clothing. Hand-fitted tailoring, asymmetry and garments that wrap or change configuration recur across work that was conceived for industrial production without losing three-dimensional precision.
GR 816 mixed military dress, tunics, djellaba-like shapes, sweatshirts and sportswear, drawing urban clothing into the same frame as travel and couture technique. His eponymous collections extended that interest through variable geometry and the reworking of menswear structures around the body.
At Kenzo, light layering and graphic contrast brought leather, tartan and geometric pattern together with kimono sleeves, obi-like ties, chiffon and dip-dyed surfaces. Éternel Parisien later reduced the scale from seasonal wardrobes to bags and small leather goods, placing material origin, repairable construction and use at the centre of the object.

1999
Rosier became the principal designer of Kenzo womenswear in the split structure established after Takada. His first full runway season was Autumn/Winter 2000–01, and he remained responsible for the category until Antonio Marras was appointed in 2003.
1996
Rosier worked as a stylist for Lacoste's leisure collection in parallel with the early development of his eponymous label. The relationship is documented through 1999; its precise starting month has not been recovered.
1996
Rosier presented his first solo eponymous collection at the Carrousel du Louvre in October 1996. Runway records document the label through 2007, while a later continuous operating history has not been established.
1992
Rosier designed Léonard's first menswear collection in 1992. The project applied his couture training to a new category immediately before he established GR 816 with Claude Sabbah.
