Introduction
Hubert Barrère is a French embroidery specialist who became artistic director of Maison Lesage in 2011. The appointment placed him at the head of a historic atelier acquired by Chanel in 2002 but retained as an independent supplier to several couture houses.
Within the Chanel system, Barrère directs embroidery and woven-tweed development for couture, ready-to-wear and Métiers d’art. His authorship remains distinct from the fashion artistic director: Lesage interprets briefs, develops samples and resolves the surface through specialist handwork.
Design ethos
Barrère treats embroidery as structure, weight and movement rather than applied decoration. Thread, beads, sequins and mixed components can change how a panel hangs or catches light before it is returned to the couture workroom for assembly.
The process is iterative and multi-client. Maintaining an independent atelier identity allows technique to develop through work for Chanel and other houses instead of becoming a closed internal department.
