Introduction
Humberto Leon is an American designer, retailer and creative director whose work moves between fashion, visual merchandising, interiors and cultural production. He studied communications and art at the University of California, Berkeley, then designed store interiors for Gap and Old Navy before directing visual merchandising at Burberry.
In 2002 Leon co-founded Opening Ceremony with Carol Lim in New York. The shop became a retail platform for designers from different cities and countries, then expanded into an in-house label, collaborations and performances. Leon and Lim served as joint creative directors of Kenzo from July 2011 to June 2019, connecting runway collections to graphic products, film and the archive-led La Collection Memento series.
After Opening Ceremony's physical stores closed, Leon returned to Los Angeles and opened the family-run Peruvian-Chinese restaurant Chifa in 2020. He helped shape its interiors, furniture and complete visual identity, extending his practice of building environments around clothing, food and community.
Design ethos
Leon's practice begins with the environment in which an object is encountered. Retail display, casting, music, film, interiors and the social life of a space are treated as part of design, allowing a garment or product to carry meaning beyond its construction.
At Opening Ceremony and Kenzo, that method produced bold graphics, sporty forms and collaborations calibrated to move between runway, shop floor and popular culture. The Kenzo tiger and eye motifs became complete product systems, while Memento returned to specific archive prints and silhouettes with a slower, more archaeological focus.
Chifa applies the same visual authorship to hospitality through colour, furniture, art and references to Leon's Chinese-Peruvian family history. Across these fields, his recurring concern is not a fixed silhouette but the creation of an identifiable world that people can enter and use.

Career history
2019
Kenzo announced on 14 June 2019 that Humberto Leon and Carol Lim would leave after eight years. Their tenure ended by the close of that month, following a final combined Spring/Summer 2020 runway at Bercy.
2017
Leon and Lim launched La Collection Memento in 2017 as a numbered archive series. Across four instalments, specific prints, silhouettes, photographs and objects were brought back into circulation, establishing a more direct method of historical research inside the contemporary house.
2016
Kenzo World launched in 2016 with a Spike Jonze film starring Margaret Qualley. Its unruly choreography and architectural setting gave the fragrance a distinct cultural identity and showed how completely the Leon–Lim era could build an image beyond the runway.
2016
The 2016 Kenzo x H&M collection enlarged archival colour, animal pattern and print for a global mass-market release. It was a major expression of Leon and Lim's ability to move house codes between luxury runway, campaign image and widely distributed product.
2012
Kenzo's 2012 Vans project placed house patterns on familiar skate footwear. Under Leon and Lim, the collaboration demonstrated how a runway image could travel into a lower-priced object without losing its graphic force.
2011
Kenzo appointed Humberto Leon and Carol Lim joint creative directors on 12 July 2011. Their shared mandate joined collection design to retail, graphic identity, film and cultural collaboration, repositioning the house for a new audience while making selected founder codes highly visible.
2002
Humberto Leon and Carol Lim founded Opening Ceremony in New York in 2002 and developed it from a multi-brand shop into an international retailer, clothing label and collaboration platform. They remained co-creative directors after New Guards Group acquired the intellectual property in 2020; collections are documented through 2022, while their later formal status is unresolved.
